Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux is a condition where a person experiences reflux of stomach contents. The reflux of stomach contents can reach up to mouth but is usually concentrated on the lower esophagus. Acid reflux surgery is usually recommended by specialists for a lot of reasons. The reasons for recommending acid reflux surgery are excessive damage to the esophageal lining and esophagus, unwillingness or inability of the patient to ingest medication for the condition for a prolonged period of time, ineffective medication and the need for a lifetime of medication which can be shortened by the act of acid reflux surgery.

Fundoplication

Fundoplication is the name of the more common kind of acid reflux surgery that is performed on most patients. This surgery entails wrapping the upper portion of the stomach around the lower portion in order to support the function that is supposed to open and close the lower esophageal sphincter. This acid reflux surgery also gives the individual a tighter flap valve at the entrance of the stomach to reinforce the function of the sphincter.

This acid reflux surgery is not as complicated as it sounds due to the many advances in medical technology which does not require deep or large incisions. In this day and age, this kind of acid reflux surgery may not even need a prolonged stay in the hospital after the surgery due to a very low down time. The small incisions that accompany this improved surgery does not require much time to get better although most doctors recommend taking things easy for a short period of time before heavy lifting or such.

This acid reflux surgery gives most of the individual who undergo this a very good chance of being cured from gastric acid reflux disease. This surgery is only recommended for patients who have difficulty attaining treatment due to some factors that affects their digestive functions. Functions such as the proper closing and opening of the lower esophageal sphincter, proper contractions of the esophagus to push down the food from the throat to the stomach and others can be the factors to this acid reflux surgery option.

Possible Complications

There are some possible complications that may occur after this acid reflux surgery. The risk of infection is there is the patient is not vigilant in taking the recommended medications and drugs that will accompany the surgery.
