Common Misconceptions about Vegetarian Bodybuilders
Many of us believe that to succeed in bodybuilding you need to eat meat. In fact most vegetarian bodybuilders are not the stereotypical thin and gaunt images portrayed in some public arenas. Many ‘flesh’ eating bodybuilders instead are turning to natural bodybuilding and gaining a deeper understanding about diet and nutrition. As a Vegetarian Bodybuilder, you too can create a diet chock full of healthy essentials that will support your vegetarian bodybuilding aims. One of the reasons there is concern for vegetarian bodybuilders is “Proteins” which we will discuss next. Click here to read more on Vegetarian Body Builders.
Are Proteins a Problem?
Many people believe that without eating the meat of an animal, you will not be able to get enough protein and other essential nutrients for a normal healthy diet. However, this is simply not true and when it comes to vegetarian bodybuilders you can easily get the necessary proteins from other food sources such as soy products, beans, various grains, eggs and dairy products which give plenty of muscle building proteins.
Of course, many vegetarian Bodybuilders drink supplemental drinks with whey protein as well as other important vitamins and minerals like zinc, vitamin B12, iron and more. While meat can provide those items, it doesn’t provide enough for the minimum daily allowances for body builders. The same applies with other foods that contain those essential vitamins and minerals. Therefore, supplements are an important factor in the diet whether it is a vegetarian one or not.
Can Vegetarians Build Strength and Muscle Mass?
Most vegetarians actually have a better chance of growing muscle and building strength on a meat free diet. Vegetarian bodybuilding means exactly that – building muscle mass and strength based on a diet filled with fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Eating meats can actually slow down your metabolism because it takes so much energy to digest it, whereas with a vegetarian diet, your body actually speeds up its digestion. Many athletes including the great Carl Lewis can attest to it!
