What we commonly know as heartburn is actually an event that occurs when the muscles that should help keep the stomach contents separated from the esophagus fail to do what they are supposed to do.
The result is that the stomach contents including some of the gastric acids are able to move upwards causing irritation to the esophagus and this is what is known as an acid reflux.
In normal circumstances the LES does exactly what it is supposed to do and there are no problems but if yours misbehaves sometimes you will experience the discomfort of heartburn.
