Maintaining a Balanced Diet
Good nutrition can prevent health problems. You must eat right every single day. The possibility of developing age related diseases can be greatly reduced by a healthy diet. The prevention of osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and heart disease can all be assisted by eating right.
Lacking the correct information in the first place can make starting to eat right difficult. A good starting point could be to use a standard nutritional guide that can at least provide the basic information you need. From there, as you become more aware of the choices available, you can investigate further.
A good (but hardly fashionable!) program is the USDA nutritional guideline. These guidelines were developed to improve overall health and help prevent disease. The guide can provide the nutritional information that you need to begin to make healthy eating choices.
For instance, did you know that a deck of cards is the same size as about three ounces of cooked fish? Visual cues like this can make a big difference in judging how much of each type of food you should be eating. This helps you to keep your diet balanced even if you are on the run. Not many of us have time to actually weigh our servings of food, so this is a perfect way to estimate its size.
Getting the right proportions of various types of food is beneficial to your health. By keeping the serving size down, you take in fewer calories, less fat, less sodium, fewer carbohydrates and so on. Over the long term, this will help you to avoid high cholesterol or possibly high blood pressure.
There are many food myths circulating about how to eat right. For example, eating unhealthy foods such as chocolate causes acne. This is not the whole truth. No one really know for sure what causes pimples; but we do know it is not chocolate.
Another myth is that eating candy will cause acne to breakout. Again, this is just not true. The fact is that acne and stress probably have a closer relationship. There is no real proof connecting sugar directly to acne. Of course that’s no reason to go out now and and grab a chocolate bar!
Don’t be distracted by the latest and greatest as far as healthy eating goes. If you practice following a program like the USDA guidelines, it will become a habit. Soon enough it will be like second nature and you wont have to think about it. It will just become a normal part of your daily routine.
One simple way to “step back” and see if you are eating right is to maintain a food diary. Take note of everything you eat for a short period of time, at least a week. It can be quite an eye opener to look back over what you have been really eating for the past few weeks.
This is a perfect way to narrow down those categories of food that you need to cut back on. Remember to note down that candy bar you had from the vending machine at work! You will see a pattern emerging before too long if you keep an accurate record but you don’t have to go overboard.
Also, it’s easy to get swayed while out with friends, if they opt for unhealthy options, invariably so would you. So keep an eye out for that happening and maintain your healthy diet options. Of course it becomes far easier once you have reasonable knowledge as to what your choices are.
By following a practical nutritional guideline, keeping a food journal and sticking to healthy food options, you will become a healthy eater in the end. Hopefully you wont have to worry about health problems like diabetes and heart disease and possibly you could even get rid of acne!
